Priority Health Tour de Leelanau

Races Within the Race

Aside from racing to see who can survive the rigors of cycling for 3 to 4 hours and still have the will and horse power to win the sprint at the finish line at Leelanau Sands Casino, racers will be contesting other sprints along the way. Two different disciplines are featured, the Advantage Benefits Sprint Competition and the Bissell King of the Mountain.

Advantage Benefits Sprint Competition

Race Within the RaceSpeedsters will have a chance to flex their muscles and nerve in the Advantage Benefits Sprint Competitions at Empire (men only), Glen Arbor, Maple City, Cedar, Lake Leelanau, Suttons Bay and Northport. Teamwork plays a role in the outcome of this elbow to elbow action as riders battle for position: so be sure to grab a good spot on the side of the road to see the racers at speeds up to 30 mph (but be sure to make sure your feet aren't in the road)!

Over $1,000 will be awarded in each competition for both men and women. The points available are:

Bissell King of the Mountain (KOM)

Hill climbers will battle for Bissell's King of the Mountain points at the top of key climbs on the course. Climbs on Inspiration Point (men only), Hlavka Road, Tower Road, Garvin Hill and Herman Road are all certified leg breakers—so to win the King of the Mountain competition, a rider will definitely have to be in his/her best shape of the season. Each climb is approximately a mile in length and gains an estimated 350 feet in elevation.
